2013 Rummage Sale
Each spring, all Active and New members of the Junior League of Winston-Salem (JLWS) as well as quite a few sustaining members, get together for a week of hard work, camaraderie, and service to the community. Since 1954, the annual JLWS Rummage Sale has been a common thread through thousands of women’s JLWS experiences. For many, some of their best moments, best friends, and best stories come from the hours worked at this event. The Rummage Sale is the largest annual fundraiser for the JLWS, funding 25 percent of the operating budget. JLWS Actives, New and Sustainer members, friends, family, community members and local retailers donate items that are sold at unbelievably low prices. The JLWS Rummage Sale is held at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum Annex and the adjacent Education Building of the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. Approximately 62,000 square feet of space houses more than 15 departments of clothing, shoes, books, housewares, antiques and much more. This is truly a community event. Many of our customers tell us that they have been coming to the sale for 10, 20, even 40 years!
The theme for the fifty-ninth Annual JLWS Rummage sale is “Renew with Rummage.” Finding treasures at the sale has always been an exciting part of Rummage. Social media sites like Pinterest and TV networks like HGTV and DIY network, have made it increasingly popular to refurbish and repurpose old furniture, housewares, and even old clothing. As the sale falls right before Earth Day, it’s a great opportunity to show how Rummage items can be recycled, reused, refurbished...Renewed! In addition, the Rummage Sale will not only offer incredible bargains on homewares, clothing, electronics, furniture, and books, but it will provide shoppers with an opportunity to “renew” oneself – by getting their blood pressure checked, learning more about family nutrition, and receiving healthy living information courtesy of Forsyth Medical Center, this year’s JLWS Wellness Partner.
