The JLWS awards two $500 scholarships to High School Senior Women who exhibit
outstanding service to others through volunteerism.
Who can apply?
College-bound (two or four year accredited college or university) high school senior
women enrolled in Forsyth County schools who demonstrate a desire to serve others
through volunteerism.
Where may a candidate get an application?
Applications are available on the JLWS Web site at www.jlws.org. Completed
application should be printed and mailed along with references and transcript to the
JLWS Headquarters.
What does the application include?
General contact information; all volunteer activities must be listed in detail; four essay
questions about volunteerism must be answered; and two letters of recommendation
(one from a teacher/school counselor and one from someone who knows the candidate
from a volunteer standpoint); a copy of the candidates’ high school transcript.
What is the due date for applications to be submitted to the JLWS Headquarters?
The application (including references & transcript) will be due by Monday, April 2, 2012.
When will the scholarship recipients be notified?
The winners will be notified on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. They will be invited to the JLWS
Annual Meeting on May 21, 2012.
What criteria are used to determine the winners?
Emphasis is on the volunteer’s activities in (time commitment, impact, dependability and
quality of performance) in conjunction with academic achievement. The judges do not
consider financial need.
Who are the judges?
The applications are reviewed by five judges: two members of the JLWS Board of
Directors, one Sustaining Member and two members-at-large. The names of the
candidates are removed from the application prior to the judges’ review.
The JLWS is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The Junior League of Winston-Salem, Inc. reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to volunteerism.
